Just got the email from Dropbox notifying that they'll be charging GST from next month. Good thing too; otherwise how would all those no. 8 fencing wire Kiwi companies compete on a level playing field with Dropbox?

portal.azure.com super slow?

Is it just me or is the Azure interface SUPER slow in NZ, like I'm waiting seconds between clicking things, no other site I use has any delay.

Am I doing something wrong, is there another (faster) way to manage my machines on Azure?

Edit:

Should also mention I'm using a MacBook Pro with Chrome, it's probably faster in IE, err, Edge.

Couldn't find an appropriate Forum so posting here, hope someone pays attention.

While checking my recently used devices on my Google Account I noticed it was successfully signed in from Sydney Australia IP Address 54.153.142.138 which belongs to Amazon as per http://www.ip-tracker.org/locator/ip-lookup.php?ip=54.153.142.138

How is it possible? On the same day I did set up a new tablet around same time but that's it. Should I be concerned?

Website DIY/ SaaS tools - real world NZ performance

$

I find myself in need of a basic website - an online CV/presence plus blog. Very basic, static, little other than text. I'd be amazed if I get more than a dozen hits a month from people who aren't me or related to me. But this is also an opportunity to learn something new and play around with some new (for me) tools, so want to experiment with Wix, Weebly and Squarespace. For now, I don't want to maintain anything other than content, so have focussed only on SaaS options.

For this type of website, is there going to be any kind of real-world performance impact from where and how the provider hosts the website? I've seen that Umbrellar re-sells the Weebly design tools to host sites locally in New Zealand. But other than that, I am guessing all 3 will be offshore only.

Basically, I am going to have a play with all 3. Can I decide which one to use just based on preferred interface/themes/functionality, or do I really need to do some kind of performance testing too?

Gmail free account Windows client options

I am currently using Outlook 2016 as a client to my free GMAIL account.

Until recently I used the POP interface to GMAIL, meaning that Outlook managed message storage and retrieval but also meaning that data storage and backup was dependent on local hard drive and backup software. I am therefore very familiar with Outlook look-and-feel and used folders, rules and autoarchive to manage message storage. Having reviewed IMAP options, I recently changed both Outlook and GMAIL settings to use IMAP. The rationale here is that all data would be stored on GMAIL servers and therefore could be easily accessed from both (Windows) laptop (primary device) and (Android) phone (read-only device but can be used to send urgent responses if needed), and there was reduced dependence on local (laptop) storage.

However Outlook is getting repeated synchronisation errors - though this does not appear to result in lost messages. Google searches reveal that Outlook has lots of issues with synchronising with IMAP servers. In fact the whole concept of receiving messages is specifically a POP-only function - that to see new messages simply requires synchronisation from time to time with the IMAP GMAIL server. Rather than try to sift through all these synchronisation errors I would prefer to consider replacing Outlook because it now adds so little value.

In terms of Outlook vs GMAIL functionality, Outlook rules can be replaced with GMAIL filters and Outlook folders map to GMAIL labels. The only value-add of Outlook is the autoarchive/archive function, which serves to remove messages from view (but not actually delete them). There is no equivalent GMAIL functionality, because GMAIL filters are applied only to incoming messages. GMAIL has better spam detection in my experience and the IMAP interface removes the need for email scanning by AV software. I have yet to research the issue of moving Outlook contact data to Google.

I could simply stop using Outlook - but on the laptop this means using a browser-based client (very clunky) and manually dealing with message management in respect of the volume of elderly messages in each LABEL.

So the key issues for me are replacing Outlook as a Windows client, retaining Outlook contacts data in GMAIL while also retaining the Android phonebook data on my phone (merging both if possible) and finding a way to archive messages in GMAIL as a means of keeping the numbers of messages in any one LABEL manageable but also being able to find and read old messages as needed.

Thanks in anticipation.

Domains4Less, Outlook.com Custom Domain and CNAME Records

Looking for some assistanceBack when Microsoft were offering the ability to have custom domains hosted on Outlook.com (for free), I finally decided to purchase a domain name from Domains4Less.co.nz and managed to configure enough in the domain settings so that my email was delivered to Outlook.com (website) as well as my Outlook 2016.

Today Microsoft have emailed saying as part of changes made earlier in the year, I need to reconnect my Outlook 2016 to continue to receive my emailURL: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Reconnect-Outlook-2016-or-Outlook-2013-to-Outlook-com-for-uninterrupted-email-access-cda1751d-9503-40bf-bf76-e79454ac5eb3?ui=en-US&rs=en-NZ&ad=NZ

Further down the page it mentions that in order to connect a custom domain to Outlook, I need to add a CNAME record to my domain to point to autodiscover.microsoft.com and points to a Microsoft website that references GoDaddy for help.

When I log into Domains4Less and navigate to adding a CNAME record, I have two boxes Prefix:Destination Address:

I have no idea what to put as the prefix and am very confused what I need to do.Assuming the destination address is autodiscover.microsoft.com

Has anyone recently gone through this and know what I do?

Replacement for Cubby for cloud and local sync

$

Have been using Cubby (suggested by freitasm - I'd give that post +10 now if I could) for syncing between my Windows computers +/- 100GB cloud.

4 good years and $NZ400 later and unfortunately vendor now shutting it down, with LogMeIn Pro supposedly absorbing its functionality for $US250/y for 2 computers and 1TB cloud.

So now looking for alternatives that provide all of the following:

1) sync/backup any folder without having to move it into a specific folder

2) specify some folders sync between computers and backup to cloud, and some sync between computers without cloud backup

3) real-time sync between computers/backup to cloud (e.g. every time my word docx autosaves)

4) not much more than $150/y

Bonus: good Android app for real-time syncing of specified folders with phone only when connected to wifi

Do I need a combination of 2 programmes? Boxifier + Dropbox is all I've found so far - anyone with experience with this and alternatives?

YNAB Automated NZ Bank Feeds?

$

I've been using the "You Need A Budget" (YNAB) app for a couple of years now and the aim for 2017 is to finally get the household finances fully under control. I find the biggest issue with YNAB is having to manually download the transactions from my online banking each week. And with small children this is getting harder to find the time to do...

I've contacted YNAB and they have no plans to integrate any of the AU/NZ banks into their bank feed functionality so this leaves me looking at some other means of downloading this info. If any bank in NZ just offered a pure "read only" api feed then I'd happily move all my accounts and banking services to that bank but after some extensive searching I don't think it's possible or will be in the near future.

Another option would be to use a different "app" potentially like PocketSmith which is built in NZ and does communicate with all the NZ banks.... However I do very much like the "Envelope Budgeting" approach that YNAB uses and PocketSmith seems quite different.

Any advice, info or discussion would be greatly appreciated.

Deploying IIS site in Azure on a different port but using Microsoft provided DNS - how to configure?

$

Helping a friend with a project where he wants to host a simple site in Azure using IIS (2012R2).

Got the server up and running and IIS installed and running. If we point our browser to the Microsoft provided DNS, it shows the default IIS page

My friend wants to deploy a different site which he's built already on the server but with a different port.

It shows up okay on the server with localhost:777

but we can't work out how to get external access. I have created a network security group to route port 777 to the server (I did it for 80 and 443 also and I see 3380 was on by default of course).

Our external DNS is <name>.australiasoutheast.cloudapp.azure.com

What I have done also is look at IIS binding and try to bind port 777 to the internal IP and use the above as the host name but I get an error invalid host name. If I leave the host name blank it saves but external access doesn't work.

Have I missed out something fundamental?

Thanks

Office365 Shared Mailbox prevent users from deleting?

$

Ive searched high and low and have not been able to find an answer, plenty of people asking the question but not for office 365.

Seems like Office 365 simply applies Full Access and Send As permissions to all of the Shared Mailbox members with no way to change anything else other than send on behalf.

Looks like this may have been done to enable the Automap fature, which id like to retain if possible.

I assume I need to do the following - use powershell to remove Full Access Permissions for each member, then re-add using only Publishing Author Permissions.

Surprised no one has scripted this or that there are not a lot of people wanting this ability?

Anyone been here before?

Office365: remove links to OneDrive

I'm using Office365 Business for our machines, and I've noted that the OneDrive accounts that come with these subscriptions is also in the default list of drives used for opening/saving files - most notably, the first drive.

We can't use OneDrive for what we do, and I would like to mask/remove it from the list of available save points, but can't seem to find a way to do it.

Help anyone?

Moving a primary domain in Google Suite

$

Hi folks... I have both "Domain A" and "Domain B" both with their own Google Suite accounts "Account A" and "Account B".

What I want to do is to make "Domain A" an alias for "Domain B".

Initial status:

Account A/Domain A

Account B/Domain B

End status:

Account A/

Account B/Domain B, Domain A

A "Mailbox X" exists in each domain so ideally contents would be merged, if not then I can always copy to an Outlook PST file and copy back after moving domains.

I could of course just remove delete Domain A and add it to Account B but I am not sure if this can be done - don't want to delete it, finding out it can't be added to another account and then not being able to reinstate.

Anyone done that?

Website101 query

So, at the risk of asking a monumentally obvious query, what are the channels/gutters/padding bits at either side of a webpage called? e.g. on stuff.co.nz, the bits where the ads appear on the right and left hand sides of the actual site/"news"/latest celebrity gossip.

I'm trying to put together a *very* basic website using Squarespace's Native theme/template. Generally it looks good, but a little stark/severe at the moment. I was hoping to put a subtle image or colour in the channels so the whole screen isn't white, but my google fu has completely failed me. Hard to google instructions when you don't know what you're instructing.

DIA gets "great" deal on defunct HP cloud offering

You got to wonder what the DIA was thinking, by getting a deal for all-government on a defunct product

http://www.zdnet.com/article/what-the-heck-is-hpe-up-to-with-its-cloud/

From ZDNet in March 2016:

HPE's cloud story remains complicated. While the company has left the public cloud behind, it will continue to offer its OpenStack-based Helion 3.0 as a private cloud.HPE, HP Enterprise, closed down its public cloud because it just stank.

I'm confused. HPE's cloud story has more plotlines than Game of Thrones, but without anything like as much action.

Most recently, HPE closed down its Helion public cloud. HPE CEO Meg Whitman had reason. The Helion public cloud simply wasn't that good

Here's the DIA press release:

New Zealand government secures major agreement with HP Enterprise

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has secured a pan-government agreement with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) New Zealand – a significant global ICT supplier to New Zealand's government agencies. This builds on the previous pan-government agreements DIA has negotiated with global ICT suppliers.

Government Chief Technology Officer, Tim Occleshaw, is pleased to achieve this milestone. "This agreement aligns with our strategy of New Zealand Government acting as a single customer and will support government agencies in embracing the move to the cloud. This system-wide approach is key to government's digital services transformation as part of the shift to a digital economy and society."

The agreement, that allows eligible government agencies to buy new software licences, cloud services and appliances from HPE under standardised terms, will result in substantial savings across the public sector over its initial three-year term, as well as saving time and resources through a simplified procurement process.

It also means all public sector agencies are able to access pricing that reflects the purchasing power of NZ government, as well as products that are structured in a manner that aligns with how government wants to consume ICT services.

"More widely," he says, "this agreement presents an exciting and important opportunity for New Zealand. It demonstrates the collaboration and collective strength that agency chief executives aspired to when we developed the Government ICT Strategy. Our vision is to create a single, coherent government ICT system that enables a radical transformation of public services. Our agreement with HPE is another step towards achieving this goal."

Adding a second user using Azure AD to a windows 10 device?

Hi all,

I would like to add multiple users to a windows device using AAD.

The first user is easy enough and they are an administrator.

Subsequent users I can not figure out for the life of me.

If you go to add a new user via friends and family it is a local account or a Microsoft account ( FYI you can no longer create a Microsoft account using an O365 email address )

I know this can be done but I am blowed if I can figure it out.

I know this is not what AAD is meant for but this will help a customer out bigtime if we can get it to work.

Thanks

John

Syncing Azure AD passwords with Google apps

$

I am using AAD as the primary user management (no local AD) and have user syncing on so users are created in Google apps.

But it would seem they don't have the same password? As chromebook cant log in, presumably this is because they go direct to google and dont get redirected like everything else does?

I know there is G Suite Password Sync but this is for local AD.

Any ideas how I can sync the passwords?
