So a few week ago I discovered my 100gb free promo on my google drive account was about to expire so I decided to look into alternatives.I had 115gb worth of storage space on my google drive account and this was not cutting it as it was almost full, after doing alot of googling I found lowendtalk forum and owncloud and a VPS host called "time4vps" Looking at the plans available I found one that included 1core of a Intel® Xeon® E5-2609 v3 at 1.9ghz1gb of ram1tb of hard drive space10tb of bandwidth100mbit portAll for $19nzd for 3 months use. After installation of ubuntu 14.04 and SSHing into it I finally managed to get owncloud running with ssl cirt (i'm a fairly novice linux user)So how does it perform?Well surprisingly not terrible I am on a 70/30 VDSL connection through spark and I can basically max out upload to the server downloading however seems to be less consistent but I can go upto my full connection speed eventually. If anyone else wants to test this server that would be interestingHere is a RAW stitched photo I took a few years ago:https://www.th3hub.tk/owncloud/index.php/s/nZM2jgEpCWKa82UAnd if anyone wants to play with owncloud and do their own testing I have created a geekzone account https://www.th3hub.tk/owncloud/User: geekzonePassword: passwordSo far as I can see it here are a list of pros and cons:ProsCostYou can do more things with a VPSIt's fun and geeky to set upYou can set up accounts for friends or family and set limits ie storage spaceConsData is not backed up (its on raid 6 but no weekly backups)Speed can variableThe server is located on the other side of the worldIt's not user friendly to set up Some images of performance
